Introducing the International Web Resource on Saint Charles Borromeo
We are pleased to present a new international web resource dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo (1538–1584) Cardinal, Archbishop of Milan, leading figure of the Counter-Reformation, and tireless shepherd of the Church.
A comprehensive digital platform designed as a reference point for scholars, clergy, devotees, and all those seeking to deepen their understanding of the life, legacy, and spirituality of this great saint of the Catholic Church.
This initiative has been ideated and promoted by the Church and Confraternity of Saint Charles Borromeo in Lugano, Switzerland, rooted in over four centuries of tradition and devotion centred on the patron saint of the Diocese of Lugano.
Academic Foundation: University of Lugano
An integral pillar of this project has been the international academic engagement undertaken by the Faculty of Theology at the University of Lugano. The Faculty has conducted dedicated studies on Saint Charles Borromeo, including international conferences and forums that have brought together theologians, historians, and pastoral ministers to reflect on his relevance for the 21st century. These studies and scholarly discussions have contributed valuable research, enriching the content and orientation of this web resource.
The 2020 Lugano Conference — “Saint Charles: A European Figure, Relevance for the Third Millennium”
From February 11–14, 2020, the Facoltà di Teologia of Lugano hosted an international scholarly conference titled San Carlo figura europea: attualità per il III Millennio, in collaboration with the Confraternita di San Carlo Borromeo and with the support of the Università della Svizzera Italiana.
This event brought together theologians, historians, and cultural scholars from across Europe to investigate:
-
San Carlo as reformer and theological reference point in post-Tridentine Europe
-
His contributions to Eucharistic theology and spiritual hermeneutics
-
His vision for integral human formation and pastoral presence
-
Anglo-Roman links and the Saint’s influence on Catholic reform movements beyond Italy
-
His reception and appropriations in academic and ecclesial settings (including the UK)
Leading presenters included established figures in historical theology and ecclesial studies, offering cross-disciplinary perspectives that bridge historical research with contemporary relevance.
At the margins of the conference, the First Paneuropean Forum of Confraternities (www.confraternitas.org) convened confraternity delegates from across Europe, promoting shared devotion, liturgical life, and cultural collaboration—underscoring San Carlo’s enduring social and spiritual influence.

Innovative Study on Saint Charles Borromeo’s Marian Devotion & the New Mariology Institute
A major new strand of scholarship explored through this platform is the innovative study of Saint Charles Borromeo’s Marian devotion. One of the key contributions to this field is Manfred Hauke’s research, including his book San Carlo e la venerazione alla Vergine Maria, which examines historical and theological aspects of Borromeo’s relationship to the Virgin Mary within the broader context of Catholic devotion.
Further amplifying this focus is the recent establishment (November 2025) of a dedicated Istituto di Mariologia at the Facoltà di Teologia of the Università della Svizzera italiana (University of Lugano). This institute, founded under the direction of Prof. Manfred Hauke, formalizes advanced academic training and research in mariological theology—with offerings that will include courses, seminars, public lectures, and international scholarly exchanges aimed at deepening theological understanding of Marian doctrine and devotion, including its historical manifestations such as in the spirituality of Saint Charles.
The new Mariology Institute reflects a growing scholarly commitment to systematic and historical investigation of Marian themes in Catholic theology, integrating perspectives from history, dogmatics, spiritual theology, and cultural studies. It also underpins future publications and conferences that will enhance research into Charles Borromeo’s Marian devotion as part of his broader spiritual legacy.
